Laura’s Bio: My name is Laura Tesler and I have been taking photographs since I was 10 years old. I always knew I was going to do something in biology, I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Fisheries Biology in 1994 from Oregon State and have have been employed in the biology world since 1996.
I studied freshwater fish biology, however, I was always very drawn to marine biology…my career led more towards the freshwater application than salt water so I had to satisfy my yearnings for marine biology by learning how to dive. I had always wanted to dive, especially after growing up watching Jacques Cousteau with my mother. On my first dive in Oregon my wish came true as I was sitting on the bottom, at 50 feet, watching black rockfish swim in front of my face. I’ll never forget how I felt that day! Although I usually do an annual warm water trip, 90% of my dives are cold water to date.
In February 2016 I went to Egypt for 15 days to see “topside” and to dive the Red Sea on the liveaboard boat ‘Aggressor’. This trip took me two years to save for and it was 1000% worth it. I specifically picked the southern Red Sea route as this gave me ample opportunity to work on my wide angle technique and shooting in ambient light, two things I do not get a lot of practice with in our Pacific Northwest waters.
Pictures from my above mentioned Red Sea trip will be my presentation to you and I hope you enjoy it.
